Ok, first of all I think that it's reincarnation. When they get "obliterated" or "move on" or whatever they are really passing into their next life. Reasons why I think that it is this way. 1. Japan has a large following of religions that believe in reincarnation. 2. I don't know it just made sense to me+it is mentioned in the beginning of the anime. But I was thinking about that second theory that you mentioned and this idea popped into my head. Otonashi said he lived a full life without regrets and stuff and that he was not supposed to be in that afterlife place in the first place. Maybe that is why he arrived after kanade/angel(correct name?). I think he did say something about it in a brief re-appearance somewhere in the forums. I lose track of time since my own midterms and now the finals are here so it's like "wait what happened I just took midterms and now I have to study for finals??!?" Oh and plus whatever I just typed prolly does not make sense because it is 11 PM and I am writing two seven page papers that are due on the day after today so I don't have that long to do them and one is a research paper on Hani Hanjour so that will be fun'(notreally) and I have two multichapter tests to study for and oh, it's just hectic. Angel Beats has some sad ones like when otonashi gets his memories back and it goes through his flashback and his sister's death his own struggle with purpose and then his death. Yeah man, I hate being busy. Like Just this last whole week I was crammin and jammin for college midterms.
