1) .hack//infection, mutation, outbreak quarantine (Video games) -
The equivalent of these video games is .hack//XXX, a manga that can be read in substitute for the game, but some things are left out and you have to be ready to be a little confused. If you choose to read the manga, also read the wiki plot for the video games so you aren't left behind when characters that never appeared in the manga pop up. This is the first .hack// and must, I repeat, MUST be read or played to fully understand the story.
2) .hack//Legend of Twilight - The anime and manga are VERY different at the end, but that isn't vital to the story. You can skip this one if you like, its a spin-off)
3) .hack//sign (anime) - Though it takes place before the others, it doesn't make any sense if you watch it first, so wait until you read the others to watch this one.
4) .hack//Roots (anime) - Though it contains vital story information for the anime and manga that follow, its not required.
5) .hack//G.U (video game and manga) - Based on the events following .hack//Roots. Also a important game and manga in the story.
6) After that you're pretty much free to check out any other .hack// stuff you want. The ones above are the basic blocks that help you understand how The World is evolving. I know .hack// is confusing, but I assure you that this is the order that makes the most sense. It's also the order of the releases of the main stories. All the other manga tell what happened to the main/side characters after the main stories (listed above) ended. Few of them are stand alone.
Anyway, I hope this helps. Its confusing, but hang tight and it'll all start to come together.
Also, if anyone disagrees with me, say so. I don't think they will though, because anyone who has been with .hack// long enough knows that this is the basic stuff in the order it was released. So, in the order it was meant to be seen. Still, its possible they made a manga or anime that made things easier to understand... doubt it though. They like to be confusing. Anyway, feel free to disagree or ask questions, I've played and watched almost all the .hack// games, anime, and manga.
Call my name.
Pull me out of the darkness.
Forget my face.
Let me sink into the light of laughter.
