A visual novel is sort of like a cross breed between anime and manga and is a tiny bit interactive. you are given the ability to make decisions that will affect the story giving you multiple endings. Some good examples are Fate/Stay night and Steins;Gate which have been made into anime.(the latter is what introduced me to them) I myself am fairly new to this and have only completed the muvluv trilogy, fate/stay night, steins;gate, and demonbane. There are quite a lot of translated visual novels already but the amount of untranslated ones dwarf them by far. For me, the best one i've tried so far was muv-luv alternative. Even though it is very linear, it just blew my mind. plus, I love mecha hehe. I am currently re-reading fate/stay as I only recently unlocked the other two routes.(plus a lot of people are saying the other routes are epic)
Light novels are sort of like short books. Anime, manga, visual novels, and light novels are all related to each other. usually, They are paired up with each other or one is based off the other. some well known anime based off of light novels are: durarara!, bakemongatari, full metal panic!, haruhi suzumiya, and higurashi no when they cry. I was first introduced to light novels after I read Onani master kurosawa.(fap note?) researched on it a bit and found out that a sort of epilogue was made in the form of a light novel. I am still getting into this and have only finished the OMK visual novel. Right now, I am trying to finish infinite stratos and the prequel for bakemonogatari. Light novels are fun to read and also have lots of things the anime/manga of that series may have left out. I recommend that if there is a translated one available for whichever series, you read it.

Fate/stay night's visual novel was WAAAAY better then the anime. I only finished the main route that the anime was based off of but the two alternate routes are almost double the length of the main one. If you want to get into the Type moon universe, i recommend you start with the VN because the anime will make you cringe.
steins;gate is another great one. This and muvluv utilize the mechanics of VN's to weave together the stories and create a plot that will blow your mind. i am looking to try chaos;head because i really liked S;G. this one i really like haha.
For light novels i guess infinite stratos? i need to read more of these
also, i haven't read the monogatari series but i have watched the bakemonogatari and i really liked that one so i subtley suggest trying that.

tsukihime - type moon makes GREAT visual novels fate/stay is by the too
tears to tiara - made by LEAF it's a rts visual novel. great game amazing story about a tribe that gets caught up in a war with a empire and is lead by someone that was suppose to be evil but was not. (you play him)
utawarerumono - another game by LEAF it is also great
Devil on a G-string (G senjou no maou) - this story and atmosphere given in this game is just great. highly recommend this if you like classical music remixed with a good story.
ever 17 - suppose to be great, i haven't got to play it yet
9hours 9 persons 9 doors this is a VN for the ds and just draws you into it. you have to beat it 4-5 times before you get the true ending it's thrilling right up to the climax.
Chaos head - if you want a pure mind !#@$ go for this one. it is trippy.

Aerial Combo Master (空気のコンボのマスター)
Element Master (要素のマスター)
Fate Stay Night. I think that is the best one of the ones I have played. It's about people with magical powers with servants that are past Heros. There are 7 Masters with one servant each and they will fight for the holy grail. The holy gril will give the winner what ever wish they wany.
Another VN is...
Phantom Of Inferno and that is the VN for Phantom Requiem of The Phantom. It's about making people to assassins and erasing people memory (you are one of the assassins). it's around 1990 (I think) so it's not like the assassins creed series assassins.
The one I play now is...
Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo, this one is a Yuri but it's not that great right now. I have only spent round 2-3 hours on it so I dont know much about the story. For now I dont recommend it, maybe uf you like yuri but other wise no.
Light novels is a think I have read a few of, the first one was...
.Hack AI buster (first and second book) It's about the game .hack and I think it's really good. I dont remember much of it.
I have read most of the Light novels for the .hack (dot hack) series and I recommend all of them espacally if you like the .hack series.
Another LN is...
Fate Zero, it's resantly got an anime. It's about the same thing as the VN Fate stay night but it's 10 years earlier. It's about the war before and you get to see how much what happaned in that war makes a diffrence in the war in Fate stay night. (play the VN before you read the LN)
The one i'm reading now is...
Sword art online. I loved the anime and wanted to read more about the series and started to read the LA. I have only read about half of the first book right now so I have a long way to go of all the 13 books or so. I think the LN is much better than the anime this far.
P.s if you want to know alittle about VN check out this link http://www.vndb.org or just send a PM to me if you want to know more about the VN or LN I have named here or if you want to know something else.
